A Smooth Guidance Law Designed for the Kinetic Energy Interceptor

During the terminal guidance phase of the kinetic kill vehicle in the atmosphere, the variable structure guidance law can be used to improve the robustness to unknown escaping maneuver of the target. Since the variable structure guidance law always leads chattering of line-of-sight angular velocity, the arc tangent function was proposed to replace the sign function in the conventional variable structure guidance law, making the guidance law smooth and thereby the sliding mode chattering cased by the sign function is improved. The simulation results show that this guidance law is simple and easy to apply, and has fine guidance precision.
