For studying the significance of effect of interlayer in sandwich structure to the passive reactive armor designs. In the paper, the ballistic performance and mechanism of the sandwich structure with different interlayer materials were studied based on experiment and numerical simulation. The results show that the important mechanism for improving ballistic performance of structure is lateral action to the projectile by bulging and distortion of interlayer that could make projectile yawing. The structure with the ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fiber reinforced plate (UFRP) interlayer has the best ballistic performance.
