The overall design of forward-firing over the shoulder short-range air-to-air missile was discussed. In order to accomplish the over the shoulder launch, the missle flight capability of quickly turning must be designed elaborately. On the basis of the features of forward-firing over the shoulder, some significant aspects of missle overall design were proposed and analyzed, including the design of aircraft platform, the optimization of rocket engine thrust curve, the choice of flight control moment, the control method of turning and so on. By performing typical digital simulations based on the model of missile, the effective control approach of improving the turning back capability of the missile was given, and the essential overall design parameter was estimated, including the rational turn angular rate and the required overload. The results are helpful in the overall design for advanced short-range air-to-air missiles.
