The paper introduces the development status of the guided mortar projectile in foreign countries from the Cold War to asymmetric warfare. Due to the changes of operational requirement, guided mortar projectile switched from targeting a single target to hitting multiple types of targets. The purpose-designed precision guided munitions and guidance kits fitted to existing conventional bombs are parallel development. It shows the trend of developing to the direction of extended range, high precision, low cost and multi-mode guidance. By studying the characteristics of guided mortar projectile, the issues, such as small-scale and high-overload measurement, extended range technique, precise guidance and control technology, integrated guidance and control module low-lost and high-overload, which should be focused on the future development of the guided mortar projectile are proposed.
