Abstract

The penetrator with enhanced lateral effect (PELE), one of the hotspots worthy of research in recent years, has important application value in military. In order to study the effect of linear variation of the axial thickness of the PELE shell on the fragmentation and crater growth performance after penetration, the numerical simulation method will be used in the research, with combination of Autodyn software and the random failure algorithm and the crack-softening algorithm, from two perspectives of the same kinetic energy and the same velocity. The results show that the fragmentation and crater growth performance of PELE projectile with variable wall thickness is obviously better than that of PELE projectile with equal wall thickness. In addition, with the increase of the thickness varying rate, the form of shell fragmentation changes after penetration and the shape of the fragment changes, the number of fragments increases, the effective fragment percent improves, the radial velocity of fragment increases, and the hole-enlarging capability is enhanced.
