Effects of Wall Openings on Mortar Flight Stability

In order to analyze the effect of the holes in a mortar shell's cylinder part on aerodynamic characteristics and flight stability, in this paper, the normal mortar model and the model with holes were built according to actual situation. The three-dimensional flow field was simulated around the two mortars using CFD software, the aerodynamic parameters of these two mortars were obtained, and the exterior ballistics flight test was carried out. The result indicates that the model with holes in the cylinder part will increase the drag coefficient, decrease the lift coefficient and lower the stability reserve. Flight instability will occur, especially at low Mach number.
