Aerospace launch technology is the engineering science and technology that studies the launch principles, methods, and design, manufacture, testing, and application of launch vehicles, various aircraft, etc. It is a branch and important component of aerospace technology, and is a highly comprehensive and systematic discipline field. The development level of aerospace launch technology determines the scope of a country's aerospace activities and national defense security area, and reflects the development level of a country's engineering science and basic industries.
To meet the development needs of space launch vehicles, space launch technology has shown a trend of increasingly larger scale, more complex technology, stronger comprehensiveness, higher automation level, and closer international cooperation. China's space launch technology has also made significant progress and achieved fruitful results. For instance, the establishment of the Hainan launch site has effectively ensured the implementation of various space missions in the future; the emergence of mobile space launch technologies represented by the "Long March-11" carrier rocket has provided diversified launch methods for Chinese emergency space launch tasks.
Currently, all major space powers regard the development of advanced launch and transportation technologies as one of the strategic deployments to maintain their leading position in the aerospace field. Whether it is space application, scientific exploration, manned spaceflight, international commercial launches and international cooperation, or national defense construction, all have put forward new requirements for launch technology, and urgently need to develop larger-scale, lower-cost, more compatible, more reliable, shorter launch cycle, and more intelligent large-scale space launch sites. With the significant increase in space launch tasks and the emergence of a large number of emergency launch demands, there is a need to develop rapid and mobile low-cost space launch methods. In response to the demands for low-carbon, green, efficient, and low-cost launches, new launch concepts such as ground ultra-high-speed launch with a direct orbit insertion have been proposed. In addition, with the continuous deepening of deep space exploration tasks, the launch technology of spacecraft on extraterrestrial bodies has also attracted much attention. The Editorial Department of Journal of Projectiles, Rockets, Missiles and Guidance jointly with Professor Jiang Yi's team from Beijing Institute of Technology launched a special issue on "Rocket and Missile Launch Technology" for soliciting contributions. We sincerely welcome experts and scholars in related fields to submit high-quality papers. It is expected that the "Special Issue on Rocket and Missile Launch Technology" will be published in the form of a regular journal in April 2025.
