The safety of weapons to unplanned thermal stimuli, caused by fires or other heating sources, can be improved by venting of projectile body. One kind of venting was developed in this paper based on balance between pressure rise rate in warhead and pressure decay rate of venting equipment. To verify rationality of the proposed venting, some apparatuses of cook-off test for explosive were designed, the effects of venting equipment on the slow cook-off and fast cook-off tests for melt-cast explosive RHT-1 were studied, and the experimental results were compared with those of tests without venting equipment. It is shown that the reaction types of melt-cast explosive during fast cook-off test are significantly affected by the venting equipment, and the reaction time in slow cook-off test is delayed obviously by the venting. The obtained results can provide a foundation and reference for designing charge of warhead.
